Wonderland wasn't always this way. There was a time when it mirrored medieval England, albeit with a few magical elements: a few quirks and eccentricities that made it truly unique. While all feared the Queen's mercurial temper and the fine blade of her Guillotine, all was well, until a little girl named Alice Liddell disturbed the status quo and sparked a revolution. The kingdom began to fall into decay as the taint of the modern world invaded. History is beginning to repeat itself and no one is happy. As the Queen of Hearts tangles in a battle of wits and riddles with the Cheshire Cat, the rest are starting to wonder ... is it true that the White Rabbit is bringing humans to Wonderland when they themselves are banned from going to London?

She remembered it. She remembered it all from the worst of times, the times when she couldn’t breathe because she couldn’t help but feel sad and guilty. Almost welcoming the feeling, Shannon lit up another cigarette; in the last few days she smoked through a pack and a half. No matter how much she attempted to push it aside and not let it affect her, the thoughts of Dominic in hospital made her feel uneasy. Her chest felt tight even as she tried to remind herself that he was the reason for her own hospitalisation, he was the reason behind her depression, he was the reason she couldn’t sleep at night. And yet, she still wore his ring.

She looked down at it, sitting on her left ring finger, examined it closely. Looked at the crystals as though she was seeing the ring for the first time and she remembered the feelings that came with it. The happiness she felt, after all, she never thought he would like her as much as she liked him. Slowly, she twisted the ring to look at the back of it, flattened over the years. It wasn’t a perfect circle anymore and she would have appreciated the irony if it didn’t sadden her so much.

Saving people wasn’t Shannon’s forte. She was always the one that needed saving, the person that needed protecting from herself. No matter how much she wanted to be stronger, she wasn’t. She couldn’t be. Convinced that she wouldn’t be the person to do it, she decided not to.

You are of no use.

“It’s all in your head, Shannon.” She said quietly, to herself.

The flat felt overwhelming. It felt like the walls were closing in on her and suddenly she felt claustrophobic in there, she needed to get out but she was scared of leaving it, it provided her with protection from the world outside.

But there was a sense of longing that she couldn’t shake and she knew the reasons behind it. Dominic was her obsession. And as much as she tried to let go, she would always go back to him... In dreams or while wide awake. In all the letters she wrote to him over the fifteen years.

The decision was made.

And even though she wasn’t a hundred percent sure whether this was a good idea, she was going through with it. There were many reasons for it, the main however was the fact that she missed him; even if she remembered that night at the docks when he scared her... she also remembered how her heart rate picked up when he held her close.

It was masochistic. The love that hurt but it hurt so good that she couldn’t stay away.

When she finally arrived at the hospital, she felt nervous. She wasn’t sure what to expect, what she was going to see. Dominic was always strong and to see him in a vulnerable state somehow didn’t feel right. Lost in thought, as she was walking down the corridor to Dom’s room, she bumped into someone.

“Sorry,” she muttered, before looking up. The man was tall, had dark hair and striking blue eyes. He was smiling, but his eyes seemed to be focused elsewhere.

“Don’t worry about it.” He said, before resuming walking. Shannon looked at him for a while before continuing herself and when she got to the door, she hesitated. After what felt like an age, she pushed the door open.

The recent conversation with Lael was just completely exhausting. And that made the fact that the school holidays started become more of a blessing rather than a burden - while Shannon usually preferred to keep busy at work, she knew that with what her emotional state was like she wouldn't be able to focus. She searched her purse for a packet of cigarettes and she got one out. Her non-smoking streak was broken but she didn't really care. She had too much on her hands to really worry about the implications smoking had. It calmed her down.

She wasn't really in the mood to be outside but she knew that if she stayed in, she would spend the entire day doing absolutely nothing and then she would feel guilty for it. It wasn't as though she had much in the ways of contact with any of her family, really, but she felt as though she was still being judged by her mother from afar. Worried that if Sarah Saunders ever chose to visit - which she probably wouldn't - and her flat was a state, Shannon would be told how she had failed at keeping herself afloat.

She quickly finished her cigarette and slipped into the closest Starbucks. Coffee was always a good idea. Shannon pulled her phone out and checked Facebook to see if anyone was about and fancied meeting up but soon she decided to duck out; she wasn't really in much of a company mood. She supposed if it was someone that she didn't have to be all cheerful with, she could pull it off but she didn't want to bother any of her closer friends. And certainly not Lael. Not after the last time.

The Starbucks was busy, as always. Shannon rested against the counter and ordered a skinny latte.

'anna' is a pathological liar and that's quite helpful in her chosen career as a lawyer. she spent some time at the hospital after having been put there, similarly to shannon, by her parents. they kept in contact over the years and 'anna' is one of the people shannon could never bear to part ways with and considering how many people she purged from her life that's an achievement in itself.

'olivia' is one of those skilled people that managed to sneakily supply shannon with alcohol and drugs, though it had to be in really small portions. that managed to keep shannon going. 'olicia' now works as a part time model and bartender.

There were times when Shannon needed to escape. The four walls of her apartment were cold on those nights, loneliness getting under her skin even more so than usual. She needed out so she decided to drag herself out.

Soho had been one of the safest places at the late hour so she decided to head there. Distraction was necessary, otherwise she felt as though she would implode. Given that she was a teacher assistant, that wasn’t something she particularly wanted – she knew she was needed, even if there were times when she was convinced that it was all in her head.

Hands clasping her handbag, she walked into a club. She chose a comfy corner with a sofa; bar stools were uncomfortable for longer periods of time as she found out. She took a few moments to calm herself. She was able to do this and she knew it. So she walked towards the cloakroom and left her bag and coat there, only retrieving her wallet and phone – ever so casually stuffing both into her bra. She needed to let herself go, enjoy life a little. Knowing she didn’t have much time left to go out as much as she should have done in her twenties, she was determined to make this count somehow. Sauntering over to the bar, she pulled out her wallet. The dress she was wearing complimented her and she adjusted her bra before choosing a drink. Walking off with a glass, she had to admit she was disappointed; she used to get all the free drinks. Maybe she was too old after all?

Her heart skipped a beat in panic as she sipped at her cocktail.

London had always been portrayed in Shannon’s parents’ house as a very dangerous place but then again, it had been always a good home where she was concerned. It was the place where she thrived as a teenager and the place that saw her grow into a more collected person over the years. And while it might have been as dangerous as her mother supposed, it was her home and she never really cared much for its bad points. Sure, she carries around a concealed knife but that hardly means anything in the capital. It hasn’t been used just yet but it makes her feel safer.

It’s always all good until life decides to do a one-eighty turn and it was not different with you.

It wasn’t... unexpected, not really. You knew him, you knew what he was capable of but it wasn’t until you saw it happen with your own eyes that you really realised it. That day, Dominic scared you.

Sometimes, people say you’re selfish but you don’t pay much mind to it. Giving a damn about everyone else ahead of yourself had been something that you have grown out of. Throughout life, you had to help people when you were breaking at the seams and nobody was there to help you. You supposed that was the reason you started hanging out with Kathy...

In retrospect, perhaps if you’d chosen differently, your life would have gone a different route. Maybe if you focused on your studies first, you wouldn’t have ended up where you eventually did... but thinking about what if’s was for all for nothing. Kathy was a good friend, she provided you with the comfort that you never got at home and she was the one that introduced you to the new friendship group. How could you have known how events would unravel? You didn’t have a clue.

The house you were brought up in didn’t belong to the most relaxed, your mother ruling with an iron fist, expecting way too much than you thought yourself capable of. It was uncomfortable at best, with your siblings having moved out; the undivided attention of your mother was focused on you. Now, critique you could handle but after a dip in your grades there was a sudden break in that relationship... and that was the tipping point, where you decided that you wanted to take life at your own pace. Keying your mother’s car might have not been the best drunk decision in your life but god did it help.

“My name is Shannon Saunders. I’m thirteen. I have tried to keep a diary before but failed miserably, so I’m going to try again...”

The blonde girl paused in her writing and pushed a strand of hair out of her face and behind her ear. For a few moments, she listened to the silence of the house until finally she sighed and put pen to paper again.

“I’m currently not in the best state. My grades started going down and I’ve become overwhelmed with it all. It’s time to decide what my future will look like and I’m kind of... terrified.”

London was not a safe place. That was drilled into your head from birth but you supposed that once you got on the other side of things, it would be easier.

And for a good while, it was. Until that day, it was all easy and fun. Maybe not so innocent with the windows that got broken or the alcohol drunk or the drugs... but until that moment when Dominic buried a knife in Jason you were just a part of a friendship group like anyone else.

That was the culminating point though and eventually it was the court case that pushed you over the edge.

Obsession was by no means healthy, you knew it and yet you couldn’t help but be obsessed. The feelings that you stifled for way too long came rushing out in an argument with your mother, which was crowned by her taking steps to finally get you out of her hair. You spent a year trying to regain your sense of self in the hospital... there were moments when you couldn’t hold yourself together and times when you and the girls managed to sneak something past the doctors and nurses.

Apparently, scars are what makes you human... and maybe you are scarred. But you’ve learnt to live with that, made something of yourself. Changed. Grew up. Finished university with a first; became a teacher assistant. A teacher. And once you saw him again, you went back to teacher assistant, unable to keep your focus for being a teacher.

Maybe it would have all been easier if you hadn’t met him again but you did and while it didn’t send you back to your worst years, you found yourself wondering. What if he hadn’t killed Jason? What would your life be like now?

Honestly, you didn’t want to know.
