Wonderland wasn't always this way. There was a time when it mirrored medieval England, albeit with a few magical elements: a few quirks and eccentricities that made it truly unique. While all feared the Queen's mercurial temper and the fine blade of her Guillotine, all was well, until a little girl named Alice Liddell disturbed the status quo and sparked a revolution. The kingdom began to fall into decay as the taint of the modern world invaded. History is beginning to repeat itself and no one is happy. As the Queen of Hearts tangles in a battle of wits and riddles with the Cheshire Cat, the rest are starting to wonder ... is it true that the White Rabbit is bringing humans to Wonderland when they themselves are banned from going to London?

Jack Nikodim Lowell
Life equals running and when we stop running maybe that's how we'll know life is finally finished.
Wonderland was his home- it was where he was born and raised and yet he never really felt comfortable. He always felt as if there was something better, the grass is greener after all. He had never known his mother before she began to turn, only ever knew her as the tyrant and so Wonderland's justice system gave him a poor view of the world. He has friends there, of course, and part of him will always miss his homeland... but he's not sad to be rid of it, and much prefers to keep his distance from the world. His reluctance to return means he has yet to realise the way back home is sealed.

London is far superior, in his mind. He loves everything about it- from the comparative fairness of the justice system in comparison to Wonderland's- to the updated medical facilities and the food, my god, the food. He's taken well to living in the city, having been taught how to survive by Madelyn, who he still searches for. He won't leave London again, not willingly... though he is curious about visiting the other places Alice's world has to offer. He's heard good things about New York...

Things don’t always go the way they’re supposed to.

For example, Jack Nikodim Lowell was supposed to become the next King of Wonderland, sat on the throne and keeping the peace. He was not supposed to be holed up in some dingy little flat in the depths of East London, living on microwave meals and cringing whenever he saw a pigeon. Unfortunately, it seems that’s what fate had in mind for him all along. Or perhaps, it was down to his own decisions, his own choice.

***

Jack was born just a few short months before the Queen of Hearts began to deteriorate. Modern medicine would have it said that perhaps the Queen’s slow spiral into madness and cruelty stemmed from post natal depression or a dysfunction of the brain but Wonderland did not see it that way. Madness was perfectly natural, a normal aspect of life and while her sudden change in demeanour was indeed inconvenient, a little frightening… it was all the little prince ever knew of his mother. She was a mercurial woman, a temperamental woman, and he took to avoiding her from an early age, ducking out of lessons when he knew she’d be present to observe (mercifully, these were rare occasions) and skipping family meals when he thought he could get away with it. The punishments for such infractions were often severe, but no matter how many times he found himself confined to his quarters or turned over a Governess’ knee, he didn’t let up. He knew well enough that his mother was a woman to avoid when in one of her ‘moods’, he saw how his aunt and the staff, even his own father- felt in her presence when she began to throw one of her increasingly violent ‘fits’. They usually ended up with someone’s head rolling… and the boy didn’t want to become the next easy victim.

He wasn’t entirely sure if his status would save him, after all.

It was in his teenage years that he learned just how right he was- Alice had come to Wonderland, though the boy wasn’t aware of that, he was far too busy with his own problems. Somewhere along the line his mother had thought it best (possibly because of the ‘wilful disobedience’ shown throughout childhood in his truancy from lessons and meetings with her,) that the heir to the throne learn humility. It was a trait neither herself nor her mother had ever shown, but perhaps her husband’s submissive nature put it in her mind that Kings ought to be humble- and thus, Jack had been given the position of a servant while he continued to train for his future role. With his new role as the ‘Knave’ to the court, he was often held to the strict regulations forced upon the servants to the crown and while the Prince thieving a few tarts would have been perfectly acceptable… a servant taking food from the Queen was certainly not.

There was no doubt in his mind that had his mother not been in a particularly foul mood that morning (for whatever reason, he doubted he was the one to blame, truly) - there would have been no trial. As it was, he was shackled and escorted to the docks, made to stand trial for a crime that was so laughably insignificant that he really shouldn’t have been so frightened. He knew better though, and knew his mother had sentenced men and women to death for far less.

It was only then that he came to know of Alice. She was called as a witness, this giant of a girl- and refused to give a statement on the grounds that she knew ‘nothing whatever’ of the crime. It was a curious thing, to be sure: Jack had never before seen anyone stand up to his parents, particularly his mother- in one of their trials. Yet here stood Alice, ridiculing their justice system and adamantly refusing to play along. It was perhaps the first moment Jack felt curiosity in regards to the city of London. For if Alice was anything to go by, there perhaps… lay a fairer view on law and order.

Her commotion in the courtroom had the merciful effect of taking much of the heat off of him, though, and his mother began calling for the head of the giant girl who had vanished so suddenly after being pursued- leaving him bound in chains and awaiting the judgement of the court. Once the proceedings had calmed down, and his mother seemed to notice him once again, she gave him a ‘lighter’ sentence than beheading. Fifty lashes with the cat o’ nine tails.

In any other world, the sentence would have been considered barbaric.

He still has the scars.

***

It wasn’t long after that that Jack started to notice changes: subtle at first, that became increasingly obvious over time. The duchess’ visits were non-existent, and his Aunt’s behaviour was changing. Perhaps not as dramatically as his mother, but enough for the teenager to notice. Since the trial he had fallen significantly in favour and his Aunt seemed increasingly intent on using his position as a servant over his status as an heir to the throne. He didn’t know why until the day she had his mother sent away, and took control of the Kingdom.

His life became considerably more difficult from that day.

While he was no longer subject to the almost whimsical tyranny of his mother, he had the new Queen and her suspicions to contend with. He and his Aunt had never been very close, and she became more and more convinced that he sought to usurp her newly acquired throne. Of course, after seeing what became of his mother, and after hearing of how she was before being crowned; Jack had lost all interest in claiming his birth right, fearing that the same fate may befall him. Yet his Aunt continued to put pressure on him, dropping subtle threats in order to crush an uprising that simply wasn’t happening. Or perhaps it was to simply dissuade him from ever considering it.

When the opportunity to escape to London came, the Knave was one of the first to go. He became quickly enamoured with the city, and while he was hopelessly useless with the modern lifestyle at first, he soon adapted with the help of Madelyn. She had found him trying to navigate a busy street one afternoon; a firm hand had grabbed him by the collar and yanked him backwards, out of the path of a speeding car. From that moment she became his friend, tutor and carer in the frightening world of London.

Of course, Madelyn never quite believed the story about his origin, confessed to her in secret one evening when he began to fear that he was being followed: it wasn’t too out of the ordinary for the Queen to send someone to bring him back, after all. Madelyn had never believed in children’s stories, though, and urged Jack to see sense and stop talking like a madman. After a while, Jack learned to pretend, learned to lie. Maddie might have been too kind to have him committed, but if he wanted to survive in London? He had to lie.

It was a few more months before it happened, before he returned home to his flat to find Maddie there with a man, a man he’d hoped he wouldn’t see again: Warrick. The Jabberwocky was stood in the centre of Jack’s apartment as though he owned the place, and time stood still. Madelyn had been unharmed, though no doubt bears her own emotional pain for letting him in after what happened that night. It was over before it began, for while Jack was able to stab Warrick in the leg and begin a getaway- the Jabberwocky was too fast, too strong; and the Knave was dragged bodily back to London with more than a few stab wounds of his own.

While he recovered, he was confined to his quarters. It took him weeks before he could get up, weakened as he was by blood loss and dealing with the lesser medicinal care that Wonderland provided. He found himself almost homesick for London, missing their better quality of… well, everything. He missed Madelyn. Over the time he’d known her he’d come to love her, though had absolutely no intention of telling her; she’d never return his feelings, would she?

Once he was well again he found himself under arrest, not thrown into the dungeons but kept in his rooms unless escorted by palace guards or Cards under the Queen’s direct orders. She accused him of conspiring against her in London, and wouldn’t give him the same opportunity again.

One night, his guard was lax… and he escaped. Only, he didn’t attempt to start an uprising as his Aunt no doubt assumed when his disappearance was discovered, no…

He went back to London, covering his tracks with the aid of the White Rabbit. Reuniting with Madelyn has proved difficult thus far, she’s moved house since then (it has been twenty years, after all)- but he refuses to give up.

jaaaaaaaack! i like how development here. once jaq fully figures out he's in wonderland, she's gonna have a tough choice to make - let him stay and fire faster there than he would in wonderland (and thus have him out of her hair) or drag him back because he's breaking the law (but have him there under her nose). very excited for what will happen in the future with these two!
